"Can we split that 4 ways?" is one of the most dreaded phrases in restaurants. It doesn't have to be. The right POS handles split checks in seconds without manual calculations or re-entering items.
Types of check splits
- Even split: Divide the total equally among N people. The simplest type.
- By seat / by item: Each diner pays only for what they ordered. Requires seat-based ordering during order taking.
- Custom split: One person pays for certain items, another covers the rest, plus maybe a third pays $40 and someone else covers the remainder.
- Split by payment method: Part cash, part card. Or two different cards with specific amounts on each.
Why most restaurants struggle with splits
The problem isn't the math — it's the process. When splits are requested at payment time (after the check is already printed), many POS systems require the server to:
- Void the original check
- Manually re-enter items for each new check
- Re-send to kitchen (or not, and hope nothing breaks)
- Process each payment separately
This can take 5–10 minutes per table. On a busy Friday night, that delay backs up the next guests and costs you money.
The right way to handle splits (with Skyline)
Skyline's restaurant mode handles splits by building them into the order-taking process:
- Seat-based ordering: When taking the order, each item is assigned to a seat number. This happens naturally during order entry — no extra steps.
- At payment time: Tap "Split Check" → choose split by seat, split evenly, or custom split. The POS automatically allocates items accordingly.
- Each sub-check closes independently: Seat 1 pays by card, Seat 2 pays cash, Seat 3 uses the same card as Seat 2 — all handled in sequence without re-entering any items.
- Tax and tips are calculated per sub-check automatically.
Best practices for servers
- Ask at order time if the table wants separate checks — before you take a single item. Then use seat-based ordering from the start.
- Don't wait until payment — it's much harder to split retroactively than prospectively.
- If a split is requested late, a by-item manual split is still fast in Skyline — just drag items between sub-checks on the split screen.
